Barrel of Monks Brewing
New Construction
Boca Raton, Florida
Barrel of Monks Brewing
1,403 Square Feet
When Barrel of Monks proposed the opportunity to create a tasting room and multipurpose space for their new brewery in the firm’s hometown, the design team thought to themselves, ‘yes, that would be fun!’. The client’s team consisted of three friends who share a common passion for beer and brewing. This passion led to the formation of Barrel of Monks Brewing where they hone their brewing skills to develop high quality ales reminiscent of the fine ales from Belgium.
After a quick study of gothic arches, growlers (and of course Belgian ale) the designers presented what was dubbed a “Bocafied Belgian Tasting Room’. Rustic wood-look porcelain tile flooring juxtaposes classic brick and industrial elements which peek through by way of platforms, bar fronts and decorative light fixture styles.
Illuminated gothic arches, polished quartzite bar tops and crystal chandeliers add the finishing ‘sparkly’ touches to further emphasize the moodiness of the tasting room.
The tasting room is divided into two distinct areas: high top industrial crank-style pub tables with stools, and a lounge area which consists of custom banquette seating with low tables/ ottomans and a relaxed ‘living room’ style furniture group. The intimate lounge setting is customized by a large-scale, tiered chandelier complete with BOM’s own stylized Belgian beer bottles, suspended along the perimeter.
The second level of the space consists of office space and an open multi-purpose area to support conference and private tasting function activities. It also provides a bird’s eye view to the two-story brewing area developed by the client and local architectural firm, Slattery & Associates. The rustic, industrial theme and color palette of the tasting room continues on this level as well.

Temecula Valley Hospital
Greenfield Hospital
Temecula, California
Universal Health Services, Inc.
178,000 Square Feet
In an effort to design a new facility that incorporated high levels of technological advancement in healthcare while providing desirable patient-centered care, Temecula Valley Hospital’s design team began its journey by drawing their inspiration from Temecula’s heritage and surroundings. Centrally located between Los Angeles and San Diego, Temecula has a diverse history from the local Pechanga Native American Indian tribe, Spanish missionaries, local ranchers, winery developers to its evolution into a regional economic center.
Temecula Valley Hospital’s interior spaces build upon the mission-style of its exterior, resonate with local flavor and embrace the positive distraction of the familiar. Hues, materials, details and themes for each area were thoughtfully selected, designed and strategically positioned to promote healing, reduce stress and provide a variety of aesthetic for patients, visitors and caregivers throughout the facility. Local artwork themes further enhance this effort. Great lengths were taken toward patient safety which include private patient rooms, infection prevention measures, standardization of layouts, attention to lighting levels, noise reduction strategies and wayfinding ease.
This patient-centered approach forced appropriate placement of the building on its site which provides patients optimal exposure to natural and beautiful healing views while enhancing the quality of the interior environment. Several other prevalent Planetree Components include care brought to the patient, open visiting hours, family accommodations and complimentary pet and music therapies.
Lean principles and an integrated project delivery approach (IPD) were used in the design and construction process of Temecula Valley Hospital. The collaborative effort of the entire design team enabled the client to keep construction costs low and construction time efficient. The team strove to eliminate waste in areas that had no impact on patient service or operational efficiencies. Subsequently, a highly efficient building composed of quality, durable materials was created for this welcoming community.

The Bistro at Boca Raton Regional Hospital
New Construction - Fall 2024
Boca Raton, Florida
Baptist Health South Florida
4,236 Square Feet
When tasked with creating a high-end dining venue for the new Boca Raton Regional Hospital expansion and renovation, the in.design team aimed to create a casual, chic artisanal café feel with a bold and curated sensibility. The aspirational yet approachable design uses sculptural wood beams, layered over suspended soffits, which wrap down the walls. This connects ceiling details and feature walls, creating an intentional, interconnected design. Wood beams intersect feature soffits, mimicking an outdoor trellis. This is set against a concrete and moss feature wall, creating a louvered effect that becomes an experiential element, which changes depending on the viewing angle. Open metal screens with rain textured glass bring an industrial flair, paired with oversized black and gold pendants. Lux seating and furniture styling throughout tops off the design’s sophistication with accents of sage, taupe and gold upholstery and metal accents, tying together the Bistro’s outdoor/indoor feel. Surrounded by wall to wall exterior glazing, this Bistro maximizes its connectedness to the outdoors with beautiful garden views, set within this casual, chic eatery.

Upscale, feminine and beautiful are the word associations that began this direction. The Boca Raton demographic has a high level of expectation for every community space, and the local hospital is no exception. Thoughtful dressing rooms and private waiting spaces are sprinkled throughout and offer the dignity any patient would appreciate and expect. A soft, chic color palette creates the feeling of warmth and comfort. Details like full length mirrors allow patients to feel beautiful and put together before they leave, no matter what the reason for their visit. Intricate floor patterns provide wayfinding paths as well as a visual distraction to reduce stress and anxiety. This project was very well received by both the staff and the community at large. It is often used a point of reference in terms of the quality of care as well as the level of comfort the spaces provide.

in.design had the distinct privilege of designing the headquarters for one of the world’s leading attorneys for sexual assault victims. The team at Herman Law, also known as “The Voice for Victims”, works tirelessly to assure that justice is served for their clients.
The design concept was to create a healing and peaceful environment for the clients who are experiencing trauma, as well as a positive distraction for the attorneys and paralegals providing justice.
This was achieved by bringing natural elements, specifically preserved moss, into the built environment, to put the clients at ease, while unpacking emotional and physical trauma. Natural elements are known to reduce stress because of the visual familiarity they offer a space.
The open, exposed ceiling in the remainder of the office, coupled with quirky design elements, such as newspaper wallcovering, inspirational slogan covered book quotes and colorful works of art provided a positive and uplifting environment for the Herman Law Team!

Nocatee Pediatric Clinic & Rehab
New Construction - Spring 2021
Nocatee, Florida
Baptist Health Jacksonville
10,000 Square Feet
The Nocatee Pediatric Clinic and Rehabilitation Center was unique in the design process, as it was the team’s first project designed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The main design components involved social distancing strategies informed by the flow of the space’s layout and allow for a high level of infection control through the implementation of privacy screens and durable surfaces and upholsteries that withstand consistent chemical disinfecting. The focus was also on creating a low-stress environment for parents to bring their sick children, in a child friendly and engaging space. The palette takes a cue from the local seaside scenery by incorporating water inspired accents, boardwalk inspired floor patterns, botanical themed screens separating seating zones, and whimsical seagull light fixtures that move the user through the space and assist with wayfinding. This fresh and playful palette creates a soothing environment in which parents can regroup while their children engage in interactive, digital play and while it facilitates the wellness process for both parents and children.

Physician's Dining Lounge at Boca Raton Regional Hospital
New Construction - Spring 2024
Boca Raton, Florida
Baptist Health South Florida
1,698 Square Feet
Another important part of Boca Raton Regional Hospital’s renovation and expansion project was the implementation of a new Physician’s Dining Lounge. The team was challenged to develop a multi-purpose sanctuary where doctors can dine, lounge, regroup, and re-charge. The intent for this space’s design was to create a contemporized classic feel with a residential sensibility where doctors can truly disconnect and rest in between shifts. One of the design challenges for this space was creating a sensible flow between the serving kitchen, dining area, and lounge/work zone. It was imperative for the space to function like an open plan kitchen/dining/living room by using soft separations between zones and implementing textured wood portals to gently define each zone, all while maintaining an overall cohesive feel. Rich wood floors, soft grey wainscotting, faux marble surfacing, black and gold decorative lighting, and rich blue accent millwork all set the stage for a space that is not only sophisticated and timeless, but comfortable and inviting for the enjoyment and relaxation of the hard working physician group.

The Food Hall at Boca Raton Regional Hospital
New Construction - Fall 2024
Boca Raton, Florida
Baptist Health South Florida
9,288 Square Feet
As part of the extensive renovation and expansion of Boca Raton Regional Hospital, the in.design team was challenged with creating a multi-restaurant food hall to serve as the main food and beverage venue for the hospital’s staff and visitors. The concept for this food hall was to create a unique personality for the space that would become a destination within the hospital. The concept for the Food Hall’s design was to create an eclectic farm to table, fresh market sensibility layered with light wood tones, white painted brick and individually themed restaurants with bright channel letter signage, textured surface finishes, bold accent tiles, and vibrant food-inspired photography. The Food Hall’s architectural language is expressed through a layered, angular vernacular that creates visual interest while setting the stage for a variety of seating types. The range from communal tables, bar top seating, feature banquettes, and open format tables combined with a myriad of sculptural geometric privacy screens help create a sense of intimacy, while allowing for visual connection through the space. This dynamic design is sure to become a destination for visitors and staff alike, to provide a reprieve from the clinical and administrative zones of the hospital.

Lantana Public Library
New Construction
Lantana, Florida
Palm Beach County Library System
29,000 Square Feet
In April 2006, Palm Beach County Library Association (PBCLA) embarked
on the planning and construction of Lantana Road Branch Library.
Inspiration for the main library's vibrant color palette was the red and
orange florets of the Lantana flower clusters. This color combination
creates a dynamic backdrop for the intimate seating vignettes tucked
into reading alcoves throughout. The cluster of decorative light fixtures
in the two-story thoroughfare emulates fireflies at dusk gently floating
above the reference desk. The lighting feature brings a humanistic scale
as well as a sculptural element to what may otherwise be a large,
unwelcoming volume of space. The success of the project was driven by
PBCLA’s commitment to sound planning principles and an open
collaboration between the design professionals.

Gloria Drummond Rehabilitation Institute
Expansion/Renovation
Boca Raton, Florida
Baptist Health South Florida
38,347 Square Feet
The in.design team was challenged to develop a design for a renovated expansion wing of the the Boca Raton Regional Hospital that would serve as a Rehabilitation Institute. A major part of rehabilitation is restoring balance, which became a key driver in the space’s design. The inspiration was taken from the dichotomies between masculine and feminine aesthetics, modern and traditional styling, minimal and intricate detailing, warm and cool color palettes, and curvilinear versus rectilinear design vernaculars, to create a fine-tuned design that truly felt like a balance between opposing forces. Rich warm woods paired against cool neutrals, curvilinear and geometric patterning, and a contemporized traditional styling all set the stage for this inviting and comfortable rehabilitation wing that inspires a sense of wellness and balance for patients and practitioners alike.

Cumberland Children's Hospital
Behavioral Health Campus Renovation
New Kent, Virginia
Universal Health Services, Inc.
78,000 Square Feet
Cumberland Hospital is nestled on a 98-acre wooded countryside, located on the coast
of the Pamunkey River. The 110-bed hospital offers specialized care for children and
adolescents with disabilities, injuries or lifelong illnesses compounded by emotional
and/or behavioral problems. Comprised of eleven freestanding buildings, the facility
was originally constructed in 1983 and resembled an adult care facility more than a
children’s hospital. The existing, plain red brick exterior facades and drab interiors
lacked curb appeal and were not conducive to the healing process, nor did they reflect the quality of healthcare provided by the staff and physicians. The CEO had very specific conditions of satisfaction for the project, including the desire for an outdoor themed environment that was gender neutral, appropriate for all ages, bright and energetic and a positive distraction for everyone. New, covered, porch-like entrances and bright landscaping were added to the building exteriors to declare colorful focal points and break up the monotony of the existing facades. The main lobby was dramatically transformed into a magical world with oversized flowers hanging above a brightly colored seating vignette and exaggerated lollipop-style trees standing stately behind the white picket fence and colorful brick backdrop. A “house façade” reception desk, complete with a flower box and coach lights, create a welcoming first impression, as well as an excellent way finding tool for visitors and new patients. This theme was carried throughout the campus to create a cheerful, memorable and healing experience for patients, families and staff alike.

Canyon Branch Library
New Construction - Spring 2022
Boynton Beach, Florida
Palm Beach County Library System
33,376 Square Feet
Canyon Branch Library will be nestled in the middle of Canyon Town Center, the epicenter and heartbeat of West Boynton Beach.
The residents who live in this area are a mixture of young and old, and the young at heart. As an active suburban community, families and individuals are constantly biking and jogging through the lush landscaped trails and paths that connect the Canyon and Valencia single family home neighborhoods.
Life is a journey, not a destination. This mantra plays into the design elements and takes into account that the world is experiencing a “new normal” of social distancing, as well as the acknowledgement that the way we behave and interact with others is forever changed.
The eye contact we make with strangers, how close we stand to them, our reaction to hearing a cough or sneeze, the importance of staying physically and mentally fit and the knowledge we seek to keep us safe, healthy and informed are all crucial to our overall well-being. These human interactions define how we navigate through our built environment. The opportunity is to design for this “new normal” is now.
Rather than a literal theme for Canyon Branch Library, the design evokes emotion with three important pillars:
Health and Wellness, with an emphasis on an active lifestyle
Nature and all its surroundings
Knowledge is power
This LEED Gold Certified, modern library will open its doors to the public in 2022. The heavily anticipated opening will be well worth the wait!
